Academic Planning

Academic planning refers to the process of determining what classes to take and when to take them. Although scheduling classes might seem like no big deal at first, things can get quite complicated if you’re not careful. Poor planning can cause you to take longer than four years to graduate. The good news is that our staff at the Undergraduate Advising Services Center is here to support you and make sure you know how to plan effectively.

Effective planning involves setting short-term and long-term goals, mapping out what classes to take in the future, as well as developing contingency plans in case everything does not work out exactly the way you thought it would. Do you know the requirements to get into your major? Do you know the requirements to graduate from your major? Do you have a “plan B” in case the field of study you thought was for you turns out to be something other than what you expected?

The content on this site is designed to help students think about these kinds of difficult questions. However, we at UASC never want a student to feel like he or she is all alone in making these decisions. For this reason, students are required to meet with one of our advisors at least once a semester. We encourage students to schedule additional appointments any time they are considering making big changes to their academic plan (such as changing their major, dropping a class, etc.). Advisors are also available via email or phone to answer quick questions.
